While in elementary school in Jackson I dreamed
of being a National Geographic Magazine photographer. We have
to dream, don’t we? Along the way I gave up that idea, but my
favorite hobbies remain traveling and photography. Today I even
carry one of those hobbies into my biology classroom at Jackson
Prep with microphotography.
As a “W” graduate, when it was called MSCW, I planned
and prepared to teach science. I was, however, sidetracked after graduation
by a surprise opportunity to learn electron microscopy in the Microbiology
Department at UMC. I later moved to Memphis to join UT Medical School’s
Neuropathology Department and then later the VA Research Center. In addition
to completing eight years in medical research while in Memphis, I met
and married by husband, Hayden. The next surprise came when Hayden had
the opportunity to transfer us back to my hometown of Jackson. Since that
move we have lived for 31 years at Audubon Point on the Reservoir.
I have always considered myself a very fortunate individual.
Twenty-three years ago I was fortunate enough to receive a call from my
former Central High School counselor, Jesse Howell, then Jackson Prep’s
Headmaster. He was looking for a biology teacher. Finally, I was going
to have the opportunity to do as I had originally planned. And what perfect
timing! Both of my children, Adrienne and Douglas, were now school-age.
I received Mr. Howell’s phone call over 23 years
ago. Since that time it has been my pleasure to know and work with Jackson
Prep’s students and faculty. Additionally, I have completed my Masters
in Biology Education from Mississippi College. Further, I have been fortunate
enough to see my own children graduate from Prep and carry with them the
educational background and self-confidence necessary for them to achieve
the professions of their choosing.
I wish for every student to make the most of all
that Prep has to offer. If you are now a student at Jackson Prep, you
too are very fortunate. You are at the right place, at the right time.
Prep’s standards and opportunities have never been greater. Just remember
what Louis Pasteur told us: “Chance follows the prepared mind.”
