Book:  Among the Hidden , by Margaret Peterson Haddix

Assignments:

Journal Response Questions (Use at least one paragraph to respond to each of the following questions)

  1. How would you feel if you lost your freedom and had to hide from the police to survive?  Do you think you would handle it as well as Luke does?  Why or why not?
  2. Do you think Jen was courageous or foolish to risk her life at the rally? Or both? Why?
  3. Had you been Luke, would you have taken the fake I.D. offered by Jen’s dad?  Why or why not?
  4. Jen’s stepfather is a member of the Population Police, yet he harbors a third child in his own home.  Is he brave and admirable or cowardly and hypocritical?  What do you think happens to him after he drops Luke off at his new boarding school?

Creative Activities (Choose ONE of the following)

  1. Pretend that Luke is about to graduate from the Hendricks School for Boys. Write a letter from Luke to his family telling them what he has learned there and what his future plans are now.
  2. Write a letter to the author of the book telling the author how reading her work Among the Hidden somehow changed your way of thinking about yourself and the world around you.  Make a connection between yourself and a character or an event in the story.  Did the book mirror your life in some way?  What questions did the author force you to ask yourself or others?  You do not need to summarize the plot of your book.  You are writing about how the book affected YOU.  Remember to include a return address.  Print your name and complete address in the upper right corner of the first page of the letter.
  3. Create an award for each of the main characters based on their actions in the novel.  Write at least a paragraph detailing why the character deserved the award.  One might be awarded “most courageous” for fighting peer pressure or “wisest” for the guidance he/she gave to other characters.
