7th Grade English Summer Reading
Book: The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien
In the past, a research journal has been assigned to the students. This year, no journal will be required; however, students will be tested on the novel. Because of the test that will be given the first full day of school, it is strongly suggested that students take notes and highlight or underline important events, characters, etc, in the novel. The test will measure reading comprehension of the novel. Therefore, if you think that taking notes will help you to remember important elements of the book, do so as you read.
After the initial test, writing exercises will be assigned throughout the nine weeks. Therefore it is imperative that students take notes and mark the selections as the novel is covered in class.
Please do not cheat yourself by resorting to Cliff’s Notes, Spark Notes or other online “study guides”. Students who are struggling readers may choose to listen to an unabridged version of the novel as they read along to enhance reading comprehension. Using unauthorized “study guides” deprives you of the chance to interact with the novel and to read independently. They are never an adequate substitute for the novel itself, and using them is a violation of the school pledge.
