The Jackson Prep PAT Board established the Jesse Howell Award in honor of Jesse Lee Howell, Jr., who served Jackson Prep as headmaster from 1970-1987. This scholarship award is given annually to a junior who has exhibited scholarship, strong moral character, participation in school activities, and involvement in the community.

Tenth Grader Wins Global Citizen Scholarship

 Tad Cochrane, a tenth grade student at Jackson Prep, has won the 2013 Global Citizen Scholarship Award for his achievement on the National Spanish Examination and for his excellent skills in the Spanish language. This national award, valued at $2,000, is given each year to 16 students from across the United States who become eligible by earning high scores on the National Spanish Examination and then submitting samples of their written and oral work in Spanish to a selection committee appointed by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese. In July, Tad will be traveling with 15 additional winners to study at the Concordia Language Villages in Bemidji, Minnesota. The scholarship covers the cost of tuition for a two-week Spanish immersion program. Cochrane is pictured with his Spanish teacher Hunter Upchurch.

 On the heels of leading Jackson Prep to the MAIS overall state championship in 2012 and a runner-up finish in 2013, Josh Williams has signed a National Letter of Intent to join the Lipscomb University men’s basketball program. Leading the Patriots to a 73-5 record in his two years at Jackson Prep, Williams averaged 16 points and seven rebounds per game under Coach David Horner. He was named the MAIS Boys Player of the Year in 2012 and a two-time conference player of the year. The honor choirs presented a concert on Saturday morning at the University of Southern Mississippi.

Anna Frances is the daughter of Steve and Kay Robinson of Flowood.

 Jackson Prep’s Earthwinds 2012 has been named a Crown Finalist in the Columbia Scholastic Press Association's Annual Critique of Literary Magazines. Finalist status guarantees either a Gold or Silver Crown, to be awarded in March at Columbia in NYC. Earthwinds 2012 also won several Gold Circle Awards - Closed (Traditional Form) Poetry, CM, Rachel Carlton; “Road Signs,” Photography Portfolio, 3rd Place, Melissa Archer; Literary Portfolio, 1st Place, Madison Portie; Overall Design, 1st Place, Earthwinds 2012. Crown Awards are the highest recognition given by the CSPA to a student print or online medium for overall excellence. Both Gold Crown and Silver Crown Awards are given each year.  Two Jackson Prep seniors have been named STAR students by the Mississippi Economic Council’s M.B. Swayze Educational Foundation, sponsor of the STAR program. STAR Students are selected on the basis of academic excellence. Both American College Test scores and scholastic averages are compared to determine the school’s STAR Student. Each STAR Student is asked to designate a STAR Teacher, the classroom instructor who has made the greatest contribution to the student’s scholastic achievement. Prep Offers Jan/Feb ACT/SAT Workshops
|

 The ACT/SAT workshop is designed to prepare students for college entrance examinations. The workshop provides students with the confidence and skills necessary to score well by familiarizing them with the test format and by teaching test-taking strategies. Experienced teachers will give twelve hours of specific instruction, which includes all areas of the two tests. Participants should bring calculators. All other materials are provided. Check-in will be in the high school foyer prior to the first session. For student security, doors will be locked when classes begin. No late entry allowed. Students in grades 11 and 12 may participate in the workshop which is designed to prepare students for the February ACT and March SAT tests.  Jackson Prep’s nationally-ranked showchoir, Reveillon, recently competed in the FAME National Showchoir Competition on the Universal Hard-Rock Live Theater stage in Orlando, FL. Reveillon placed first in the preliminaries among fifteen showchoirs from seven different states. Reveillon was awarded FIRST RUNNER-UP, BEST VOCALS, and BEST FEMALE SOLOIST WITHIN A SHOW was awarded to Evelyn Field. Because of the outstanding placement, Reveillon was invited to compete in Chicago at the National Showchoir Cup in April.

 Jackson Prep students Mary-Hannah Smith, sophomore, (right) and Sarah Santucci, junior, earned national recognition for their works of art in the prestigious The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards of 2012. Smith received a gold key (mixed media-Mandala), and Santucci received a silver key (photography-Moon Lit). They are among the most talented young artists and writers in the nation. Two hundred thousand works of art and writing are submitted, and only 1500 are recognized at the national level. The students are invited to the Awards Ceremony at Carnegie Hall on June 1 and to participate in a number of showcase events at Parsons The New School for design in New York City.  JACKSON PREP’S AWARD WINNING DEBATE TEAM Jackson Prep’s debate team has participated in 8 tournaments so far this year and will participate in 3 more. The students have won a number of awards at tournaments in various events (Lincoln Douglas debate, Congressional debate, and Impromptu Speaking). Jessie Cox qualified for the National Catholic Forensic League National Tournament in Lincoln Douglas debate which will be held in May. The national qualifying tournament for the National Forensic League is in March.
