Types of Service:
·
Independent
Community Service This is volunteer
work done in the community by students, either individually or in groups, that
is initiated by them and arranged through consultation with their parents and
the organizations for which the service is being provided. The responsibility
for determining what is appropriate service for each individual student belongs
with that student and his/her parents. The Jackson Prep Board of Trustees nor any of its agents are
responsible for any injuries or damages sustained by students as a result of or
in any way connected with students participation in Independent Community
Service. Opportunities for Independent
Community Service will be posted in the daily bulletins and on the Community
Service bulletin boards. Students can also obtain ideas for service by meeting
with the Community Service Coordinator. Work
that is compensated with money or grades or hours done for membership
requirements to a club (i.e. National Honor Society), organization (Boy Scouts
Eagle Project, meetings, etc.) or religious institution (singing in choir,
teaching Sunday School, etc.) cannot be credited
toward a Community Service Certificate.
For mission trip work, only the hours of “actual” service (not travel
and leisure) will be allowed to count.
If there is any question whether or not service performed can be
credited toward an award, contact the Prep Community Service Coordinator.
·
In-School Service Throughout the year there are numerous
opportunities for students to help-out on campus. Opportunities will be announced as they
occur. A maximum of 4 hours can be credited toward a Community Service
Certificate. Work performed while a
student is in detention does not
count.
·
School-Sponsored
Projects There will be some opportunities for
community service in School-Sponsored projects.
Each project will be limited to a specified number of students and
depending on the nature of the work, may have age or other restrictions. These projects will be under the direction of
the school’s Community Service Coordinator.
For any project off-campus, students will be required to provide a
signed Parental Consent Form to be able to participate.
·
All requests for Prep’s involvement in
any community service project must be directed to the Community Service
Coordinator, and all School-Sponsored Projects require the approval of the
Community Service Committee.
