Subject: Jackson Prep - For Parents of 7th Graders - From Carolyn Tatum

Dear 7th Grade Parents,

Last spring, Prep allowed me to visit the Beach and Barrier Island Camp at the J. L. Marine Research Facility in Ocean Springs, MS.  I participated in all the student activities along with a school from Louisiana.  The hands on learning included exploring the marshlands, sieving the shallow surf, and exploring Ship Island in small groups.  Biologists and teachers from the Marine facility supervised all group activities.  It is definitely the type of investigation that I want our students to experience.  I would like to propose this trip for our students and the Prep administration supports this trip.

Because the camp can only house 60 students at one time, we will need to make two trips on two different dates.  We will take approximately half of the students on each trip while the others remain at school.  The camp directors have asked that we have an equal number of males and females for housing in the dormitory suites. Students will be assigned alphabetically for either the March or the April trip.   Students will leave school on Monday morning and return on Tuesday night.  The only dates that are available to us are March 22-23, 2010 and April 12-13, 2010.  The group attending on March 22-23 will be students beginning with Ebony Aiken through Riley Kellum.  The group attending April 12-13 will be Bray Koury through Chadwick Word.  Faculty members will accompany the students and will closely monitor their activities.

The cost of the camp is $200.  This includes the camp cost, food, lodging and transportation.  Your student will need change for the cost of a meal on the way home and for snacks at the camp or on the ferry to Ship Island. All other meals are included in the fee. Send your payment to the junior high office accompanied by the signed parent statement of consent.  Full payment is due by February 25, 2010. If you prefer, two payments of $100 can by made by January 25, 2010 and another payment by February 25, 2010.

I hope that you are excited about the opportunity for your student to learn about our barrier islands and local marine life in unique and “fun” way.

Looking forward to our beach experience,
