Mary Katharine Loyacono McCravey Gallery

The Mary Katharine Loyacono McCravey Gallery hosts art exhibits that change monthly. The Gallery allows students to see the work of local artists as well as student work displayed in a gallery format. Students have also helped hang shows, giving them an understanding of the process of displaying art. The gallery is named for Mississippi artist Mary Katharine Loyacono McCravey. (1910-2009). Born in Forest, MS, Mrs. McCravey was among the first art educators in the Jackson Public School system. She taught art at Enochs Junior High School and Central and Provine High Schools in Jackson. She studied at the University of Chicago, the Art Institute of Chicago, the University of Colorado, the Art Colony in Rockport at Cape Ann, MA, and the Art Colony of Taos, NM. Her painting career began when she was invited by Jackson businessman Richard McRae to exhibit and sell her works at his newly built department store in the Meadowbrook area of Jackson. Mrs. McCravey was a 2004 recipient of the Mississippi Arts Commission's Governor's Excellence in the Arts Award for Lifetime Achievement.

Johannes Vermeer: The Art of Painting

The work of 17th-century Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer was highlighted in a show that featured images of the work and still life arrangements inspired by each. Curricular materials were developed that highlighted the intersection of art history and math, music, war, peace, cartography, theater, exploration, family literature, geography, interior design, home lie, science, technology, and more. In addition to student and faculty interaction with the show, the members of the Jackson Watercolor Group came to Prep to paint from the still life arrangements.

Senior Art Show

Each spring, the Mary Katharine Loyacono McCravey Gallery hosts an exhibit of work by Senior art students. Seniors select the work they want to show, and the work is hung by Juniors in the National Art Honor Society. An opening reception allows the seniors' work to be appreciated by family members, friends in the community and the Jackson Prep family.
